Lovecraft Country’s Misha Green is bringing a Black Canary movie to HBO Max but will Jurnee Smollett return in the DCEU project?
Last year, it was revealed that film and TV screenwriter, director, and producer Misha Green would be developing a Black Canary film for HBO Max.
When we meet the DCEU‘s Dinah Lance / Black Canary in Birds of Prey (And The Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn), she is a resident vocalist at the Black Mask Club and the personal chauffeur for Gotham crime lord, Roman Sionis. She inherited her meta-human abilities, which allowed her to produce supersonic vibrations through screaming, from her late mother (presumably Dinah Drake Lance) who was also a cop for the Gotham City Police Department.
Disenchanted by Sionis’ cruelty towards others, she fought back against the sadist with the aid of Harley Quinn, Huntress, and GCPD detective Renee Montoya, in order to protect Cassandra Cain, who had stolen a Bertinelli Diamond from the crime boss.
Black Canary was portrayed by Jurnee Smollett in the 2020 film and her performance was very well-received. Will she return for the HBO Max project?
Is Jurnee Smollett reprising her role in HBO Max’s Black Canary movie?
If you were a fan of Jurnee Smollett’s Black Canary in Birds of Prey, you’ll be thrilled to know that she will reprise her role in the upcoming HBO Max film.
The star confirmed the news herself on social media, taking to Twitter to share Collider‘s report, with the caption “Guess the Canary is out of the cage! So excited to finally embark on this adventure with my creative soul sis.”
There has been no official release date given for the project and there are no story details as of yet. It will most likely take place well after the events of Birds of Prey. That said, the DCEU is evolving and the upcoming The Flash movie will be pivotal in changing things.
With that in mind, the Black Canary movie’s story remains as much of a mystery as the future direction of the DCEU itself.
Sue Kroll will be producing Black Canary through her Kroll & Co. Entertainment production banner.
