Andy Samberg would be a flawless choice to play DC Comics’ Plastic Man in a live-action project.

Fan casting is a fun thing to do. You get to look at a performer and think about which of your favorite comic book characters they can play. This writer has done a few articles casting comic book characters. Among them are the Fantastic Four, Doctor Doom, and the Lord of Hell Mephisto. Each of the articles displayed actors and actresses who would crush the role as they are in the comics or add a new twist to the source material.

One character that we have yet to see appear in a live-action DC movie is Plastic Man and that makes him perfect for a fan-casting. As pointed out by one Reddit user, Brooklyn 99 and former Saturday Night Live cast member Andy Samberg would be an incredible choice to play that beloved Justice League character.

On that note, let’s discuss why Andy Samberg would be fantastic choice to play the character in a live-action DC project.

Who is Plastic Man?

Patrick O’Brian, a.k.a. Plastic Man, is one of the most underrated comic book characters of all time. People look at his goofy and often obscure personality and take him as something of a joke. Some take his powers lightly as well. Villains of the Justice League quickly found out why underestimating him is a mistake.

In Dark Night Metal, Plastic Man unleashed a fury unlike anything we’ve seen from him. Considering the odds they were up against, it was needed. During Injustice, he did the impossible three times. First, he was fast enough to take out the Flash. Next, he broke into the most secure prison in the world being monitored by Cyborg. Lastly, he freed the imprisoned Green Lanterns and escaped.

Why Andy Samberg should play Plastic Man

Plastic Man is funny on a Spider-Man and Deadpool level. Although, he has something that they don’t. He can use his shape shifting ability to add to his humor. Something as simple as stretching his mouth turns a simple joke into a hysterical one. This kind of comedy will go a long way in making a movie or TV show different from other projects in the genre. And, as we’ve seen on more than a few occasions, Andy Samberg can be knee slapping funny.

Samberg’s SNL performances are well-documented. They’ve helped catapult his rap group The Lonely Island to stardom. Songs like “D**k in a Box”, “Jack Sparrow”, and “I’m on a Boat” have given the group notoriety all over the world. It would be easy for him to slip into the role of the Justice League’s jokester.

However, for all of Andy Samberg’s comedic attributes, he’s capable of being serious as well. In 2020, he co-starred with Cristin Milioti in the Hulu original film Palm Springs. We were given all of the normal hilarity from Samberg, but there was more to his character. We saw him be serious, romantic, and caring as well, and Samberg portrayed it very well.

Whoever portrays Plastic man would have to balance the jokes and the dramatic moments viewers would expect. This writer can’t think of anyone better than Andy Samberg to do this. If he is not cast as the character in a live action or animated project, it would be a missed opportunity.
