All of Marvel’s Netflix shows will leave the streaming service in March
Marvel’s Defenders franchise will reportedly be bowing out of Netflix in March as Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, The Punisher and The Defenders will all be leaving the streaming service.
Marvel Studios may be dominating the streaming world these days through the MCU’s expansion onto Disney Plus, but this isn’t the first time that Marvel characters enjoyed a successful run on the small screen.
A host of Marvel Comics characters dominated Netflix a number of years back, with shows like Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Iron Fist and Luke Cage all drawing Marvel fans to the service before the heroes united in the limited series The Defenders. After that, Frank Castle took center stage in two seasons of The Punisher.
Unfortunately, that shared universe came to an end in 2018 when all of the shows were cancelled in spite of their success, with Disney Plus being retroactively being used as the reason.
While the produced seasons continued to enjoy a great deal of success on the streaming service in the years after each show’s cancellation, it now seems that this will also come to an end as well, as the shows are set to leave Netflix next month.
Why are the Marvel shows leaving Netflix?
As revealed by What’s On Netflix, the Marvel shows will be departing Netflix in March 2022. While it has yet to be officially announced by the streamer, removal notices have begun popping up when viewers watch episodes from any of the Marvel Netflix shows, notifying them that each of the series will be available until March 1.
As for why the shows are leaving Netflix, the answer is complicated because there isn’t quite a definitive one. The likely reason, though, is the fact that Marvel Studios is now producing its own original content on Disney Plus (and has started referencing characters we saw in the Netflix shows through properties such as Hawkeye), meaning that Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, The Defenders, The Punisher and Iron Fist could find their way onto that streaming service instead.
We’ll just have to wait and see.
