Marvel Studios has unveiled a brand new trailer for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

It’s taken six years and four movie team-ups, but Doctor Strange is finally getting a sequel. Directed by Sam Raimi, In the Multiverse of Madness will thrust Stephen Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) into the large tapestry of Marvel’s multiple dimensions. Luckily for him, he won’t be alone — he will be joined by Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen), America Chavez (Xochitl Gomez) and Wong (Benedict Wong).

The film’s subject matter has many eager to learn more from it. Luckily, that time has arrived. Strange’s second solo adventure is less than three months away, and with the Super Bowl here, Marvel Studios has released a new trailer for the film.

The new look shows off the movie’s mind-bending action sequences, teases more about the antagonist(s) and gives us a better idea of the almost-insurmountable challenges our heroes will be dealing with.

It’s interesting to think that in 2016, Doctor Strange was a relatively self-contained adventure meant to ease audiences into the concept of magic existing in the MCU. Now, we get to see the good Doctor travel through dimensions, meet different versions of himself and try to save the MCU from collapsing into multiversal chaos.

It’s a testament to how much the MCU has evolved in a relatively short period of time, as well as the remarkable effort Marvel Studios has made to introduce audiences to the larger-than-life concepts of comic books.

Multiverse of Madness is not your typical sequel

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has built a reputation for pushing the boundaries of superhero movies with franchise-changing events like Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, Endgame and Spider-Man: No Way Home. If rumors are to be believed, Doctor Strange‘s sequel has the possibility to join that list, because it’s poised to become one of Marvel’s most ambitious projects yet.

Multiple rumors have been swirling around about In the Multiverse of Madness featuring characters from past Marvel franchises (X-Men, Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man and even 2003’s Daredevil), as well as variants of other Marvel heroes not connected to previous films (mainly Tom Cruise as Iron Man and John Krasinski as Mister Fantastic).

Such reports are to be expected, of course, given the movie’s subject matter, but them being accurate would offer a multitude of promising storytelling possibilities for Stephen Strange and the MCU. There’s an argument to be made about the dangers of relying on universe-shifting events like the ones constantly tackled by the MCU to carry a franchise. This is especially relevant given the fan concern that followed a report of In the Multiverse of Madness undergoing extensive reshoots.

However, by nature, Doctor Strange lends himself to the out-there exploration of the multiverse, so the (no pun intended) madness that is sure to break out in the film will likely be a fitting Stephen Strange-centric adventure, while also offering a fruitful expansion for the MCU.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will arrive in theaters on May 6, 2022.
