Was Jeff Goldblum offered the role of Bruce Banner?

Before Thor: Ragnarok, Jeff Goldblum was actually considered for the role of the Hulk at one point. When Ang Lee was casting for Bruce Banner in the 2003 film, he first looked at Billy Crudup. When Crudup ended up turning down the role, he had Goldblum do a test for the character. He didn’t end up getting the role, which ended up going to Eric Bana instead.

We don’t know how much that Hulk movie really counts as being in the Marvel movie canon — we’re assuming barely since the 2008 Incredible Hulk movie is under Marvel Studios. But since Mark Ruffalo is now the Bruce Banner we know and love, it is hard to think of Bana in the role. But, things did work out for the best as Jeff Goldblum was able to take on the character of the Grandmaster in 2017’sThor: Ragnarok.

That character is definitely a fan favorite, and Goldblum was able to bring his characteristic charisma and uniqueness to the character. We can’t imagine that movie without him, to be honest. We aren’t really sure he would make a great Hulk, but we do love having him be a part of the MCU, especially because he is such a big fan of shipping.
