The long-running Arrowverse show concludes its seventh season, but is Legends of Tomorrow season 8 happening?
Legends of Tomorrow is on the precipice of becoming the joint longest-running Arrowverse series. The CW series has now completed seven seasons and, if it is renewed for an eighth, it will have the prestigious honor of joining parent shows Arrow and The Flash at the top of the shared universe’s mountain (that is until The Flash is inevitably renewed for its ninth season).
The seventh season was one of the show’s most unique in a very long time. Instead of taking Sara Lance, Ava Sharpe, Nate Heywood and the rest of the time-travelling crew of outcasts and misfits on another trip through time, it grounded them in 1925 without their beloved Waverider, forcing them to find their way back home to 2021.
With the conclusion of that season upon us, both the penultimate episode and the season finale have left viewers wondering that the future holds for Legends and if we’ll be tuning into Legends of Tomorrow season 8 next season. Here’s what we know.
Is Legends of Tomorrow season 8 happening?
Legends of Tomorrow season 8 has not yet been greenlit at The CW. However, the likely reason for that is simply down to the fact that the network has yet to renew any of its scripted shows for the 2022 – 2023 TV season.
It’s pretty much a given that there are more episodes behind Legends than there are in front of it, but that doesn’t mean the show won’t stick around for some time to come. In fact, its seventh season has actually seen viewing figures dramatically increase and the creative team aren’t planning on the seventh season being its last.
At least year’s Comic-Con@Home panel, co-showrunner Phil Klemmer revealed his hopes to see the fans “next year in real life”, implying that an eighth season is the hope. Moreover, fellow co-showrunner Keto Shimizu revealed to TVLine that, in spite of the seventh season’s series finale-like ending, the show is not being written as if it’s ending.
With that in mind, it’s best to wait and see if Legends of Tomorrow season 8 goes ahead, but given that it’s one of the network’s most reliable shows and a veteran Arrowverse series like it deserves the chance to conclude its own story (and not have it abruptly cancelled), it’s highly likely that the show will return for at least one more season.
