After years of anticipation, The Batman has finally made its presence felt on movie theaters around the world. Matt Reeves’ vision of Gotham City, complete with Robert Pattinson’s critically-acclaimed turn as DC’s Dark Knight, has been a major topic of conversation in recent weeks and now audiences get to experience it for the first time.

The Batman is unlike its predecessors, taking an even more grounded approach to the mythology than Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy did, and it’s an approach that has won over many.

Yes, the film looks set to reinvigorate the franchise once more. That doesn’t automatically guarantee a future for it, though. Remember, Christopher Nolan was adamant he was finished with the character after the third film in his series. What if Matt Reeves only envisioned The Batman as a one-movie story?

If you’re one of the many hoping for a sequel to The Batman, you’ll be glad to know that there is indeed one in the works. Matt Reeves has planned a trilogy, with principal cast members signing on for sequels back in 2019, meaning that we can expect to see at least two more films.

The franchise is aiming to build a separate continuity outside of the DCEU, with two spin-off shows set for HBO Max as well. One of those will focus on the rise of Colin Farrell’s Penguin, while the other will spotlight the GCPD in some capacity.

When does the sequel to The Batman come out?

There has yet to be an official set date for the release of The Batman 2. It will be some time given that the first one has just hit movie theaters but it is expected to be a long-term priority of Warner Bros. and DC due to how well the opening film is expected to perform.

Producer Dylan Clark recently revealed to ComicBook.com that we will definitely see it before 2027, commenting that he “will go on record and say that it will be less than five years”.

With all of that in mind, rest assured that there is a second installment on the horizon, even if it is quite a while away.
