Ewan McGregor returns as the first Obi-Wan Kenobi trailer released
The first trailer for Obi-Wan Kenobi has arrived as part of Disney’s Shareholders Meeting !
It’s been almost two decades since he was last seen in the Galaxy Far, Far Away, but Ewan McGregor is finally stepping back into Obi-Wan Kenobi’s boots for the Jedi’s own Disney Plus series. The project experienced a challenging development process throughout the years, but it’s finally a reality.
The series, directed by Deborah Chow (The Mandalorian, American Gods), promises to be a memorable Star Wars event, and we’ve been eagerly awaiting our first look at it. Now, as part of Disney Shareholders Meeting, we have the first trailer for Obi-Wan Kenobi.

To provide some context for those unfamiliar with Star Wars’ complex timeline, this new series takes place 10 years after Revenge of the Sith and nine years before A New Hope.
Obi-Wan’s time in exile has been of particular interest to Star Wars fans over the years. Franchise-faithfuls have long theorized about what the Jedi experienced, and there have even been comic books devoted to exploring that period in his life. Thanks to this new television series, we will actually get to see what that time was like in live-action.
Following in the footsteps of The Mandalorian, the show features movie-quality visuals, which is especially exciting given that we will get to see a relatively young Kenobi in action with more modern special effects.
Former Friends Reunited
Arguably one of the most interesting aspects of the Star Wars prequel trilogy was Anakin and Obi-Wan’s relationship. They were mentor and mentee, but above all, they were best friends.
Their friendship (and its eventual disintegration) offered one of the best storylines in the Galaxy Far, Far Away. Unfortunately, we only got a brief taste of it in live-action.
With Hayden Christensen returning as Darth Vader, we will have the opportunity to see the continuation of their (fractured) bond, even if it is as mortal enemies. When Christensen was announced to have joined the series, Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy promised his arrival would bring the “rematch of the century.”
Putting the exciting possibility of another fight between Vader and Kenobi aside, what’s particularly interesting about their new encounter is the emotional punch it could deliver for viewers.
Following his fall from grace, Anakin Skywalker quickly became one of the most feared individuals in the galaxy. He was ruthless and extremely violent to anyone who would cross him. Yet, there was a part of him that remained in the light side, and we got to see it a few times (albeit briefly) in Star Wars: Rebels and in comic books.
As such, seeing Darth Vader come face-to-face with his former best friend offers the possibility of some deep character exploration for both the Sith Lord and Obi-Wan. The Star Wars franchise has usually excelled at complex character relationships, so Obi-Wan and Vader meeting once again could add to the emotional gravitas present throughout almost every story in the Galaxy Far, Far Away.
Obi-Wan Kenobi is scheduled to arrive on Disney Plus on May 25, 2022.
