The Flash season 8’s returning episode concluded on a questionable note. What does it all mean?

The Flash has been off screens for a number of months. The beloved Arrowverse series aired the first five episodes of its eighth season as its special Armageddon event last year before taking an early midseason hiatus. Now it’s back with what can only be described as a “timey wimey” midseason premiere.

The returning episode, titled “Impulsive Excessive Disorder”, saw the returns of Jessica Parker Kennedy as Nora West-Allen, a.k.a. XS, and Jordan Fisher as Bart Allen, a.k.a. Impulse, as the pair sought to repair some major damage to the timeline they think they have caused. Of course, it has some surprising consequences.

Being the children of Barry Allen, the pair managed to correct the timeline and set the events of

The Flash

‘s first seven seasons back in motion. And when we returned to the present, we saw that one of the show’s overarching stories from last season was indeed set to continue.

Why did Iris’ hairbrush disappear in The Flash season 8?

As Iris West-Allen came down the stairs so that she and Barry could take their family and friends on a festive holiday to Paris, she brushed her hair before putting that brush on the nearby sofa. When the Scarlet Speedster zoomed his family off on holiday, however, the brush glowed a bright green before disappearing from existence, leaving behind some bright green sparks as it did so.

If you watched the previous season, you’ll know that the green sparks signify the presence of the Still Force, a.k.a. Deon, who was protecting Iris in the second half of the season after she began phasing in and out of the timeline and glowing bright green. Though Deon was able to stabilize her, we soon found out that he couldn’t cure her of whatever was wrong with her. And now we know that Iris’ “time sickness” will continue to factor into The Flash season 8.

Showrunner Eric Wallace revealed to TVLine that the storyline would resurface after Armageddon and that solving Iris’ time sickness “is a huge, huge part of the entire season” and that it will “take all season to solve that”.

Whatever that means remains to be seen, but you can rest assured that the glowing / phasing hairbrush is just the beginning in the resurfacing of Iris’ time sickness.
