The Flash season 8 ‘s midseason premiere was all about bringing back old characters, but it opened with a surprising return.

The Flash season 8 returned to screens after a relatively long break. It initially aired its five-episode event last year, crossing over with other Arrowverse shows as Barry Allen went up against the deadly Despero.

But with Armageddon now in the rear-view mirror, sights are set on the remainder of the season, starting with the midseason premiere “Impulsive Excessive Disorder”. Focusing on Bart and Nora West-Allen after their departure following their parents’ vow renewal in season 7, the sixth episode of the season saw the speedster siblings travel to both the future and the past.

As fans knew going into the episode, their trip to the past meant the return of Rick Cosnett’s Eddie Thawne. The character was a regular in season 1 but died in the finale when he sacrificed himself to erase his villainous descendent, Eobard Thawne, from existence. However, Eddie wasn’t the only character that the show brought back from the dead.

Jay Garrick is alive in The Flash season 8

The midseason premiere of The Flash season 8 also saw the return of John Wesley Shipp as Jay Garrick, as the episode dropped the bombshell that the timeline had changed and that Jay was now alive in the future.

While Jay has always been alive in the present (and recently returned to help Team Flash defeat the army of Godspeeds), the veteran speedster was killed at some point in the timeline’s future by Godspeed himself – who we found out was the archenemy of Impulse. And as Bart was very close to “Uncle Jay”, he sought revenge on Godspeed in the present.

It turns out that their showdown in the present actually ended up saving Jay from dying at the hands of Godspeed. And even though Bart and Nora did have to repair various aspects of the timeline (including Joan Garrick being wiped from existence and replaced by “Aunt Rose”), things still worked out for the better in the end as Jay – and Joan – Garrick was alive and well.

The Flash season 8 airs on The CW on Wednesdays at 8:00 p.m. ET.
