The Boys season 3 trailer breakdown: Butcher becomes what he hates
By Mark Lynch
The trailer for The Boys season 3 has been released and it showcases a lot in less than two minutes.
Amazon Prime Video’s The Boys season 3 is a highly anticipated release. Animated series The Boys Presents: Diabolical certainly gave fans something to hold on to until the show is released on June 3rd. But other than a few comments from the cast and the reveal that Jensen Ackles will be playing Soldier Boy, we really didn’t know much. Until now.
The teaser trailer for The Boys season 3 was released at the show’s SXSW panel and it didn’t disappoint.
First things first, wow. The season 3 teaser trailer shows so much in a short amount of time. What’s even more impressive is that it isn’t a jumbled mess that’s hard to follow. Sometimes a trailer can pack in too much and it looks bad. In this case, though, we saw glimpses into the future of The Boys, The Seven, Vought International, and Soldier Boy’s team Payback.
The Boys season 3 trailer breakdown
Maybe the most important thing in The Boys season 3 trailer is the fact that Billy Butcher has powers. This writer assumed he would get them. It would only make sense. However, this isn’t what was expected. Butcher has ended up with laser eyes. Thus, it’s not like the comic where he only had super strength.
Who knows what else he can do. If this writer had to guess, he also has super strength. Who knows? Maybe he got the full Homelander package and he can fly too. We’ll have to wait and see. One thing is definite, though, Butcher became what he hated, and this could lead us closer to the show ending like The Boys comic book. Unfortunately it’s where Butcher becomes the actual villain of the story, even more than Homelander.
It also looks like Butcher may have given the other team members powers. Mother’s Milk is squeezing a chair in anger. For someone who normally keeps his cool, something major must have happened. Plus, Hughie’s arm was broken. Butcher probably gave Hughie an ultimatum. Either take Compound V or keep a broken arm.
Also, it looks like we’ll be getting a musical sequence and / or episode of The Boys – something that shows like Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Lucifer have done well.
The Seven
Next up we have The Seven. There still seems to be dysfunction among them. A-Train looks to be attempting to be a civil rights leader. In actuality, it’s probably for money. A-Train doesn’t understand the idea of helping people without monetization. Homelander is still slowly losing it – so much that he’s milking a cow. There was a moment where he had to remind himself to smile. Starlight is also shown crying. If this writer had to guess, it’s because Hughie hurt her.
As for Queen Maeve and Black Noir, there isn’t much to go on. Maeve is shown using her sword, but that’s it. She could be practicing for her next “mission” or for a movie. Black Noir is much himself, drawing a random picture and staring at someone or something. Although, the clip of him breathing heavily is something to pay attention to. It could lead to an ending very much like the comic book. He could be staring at a target he’s not allowed to kill.
Soldier Boy and Payback
Fans of Jensen Ackles have to be happy seeing him as Soldier Boy. We also get an answer to whether or not we’re seeing Soldier Boy from the past or the present. It’s both, it seems. Soldier Boy is a “superhero” from the past. The films of him during the war were real. Instead of the character dying and a new person taking over, The Boys have done something clever: They pulled a Winter Soldier. The last thing we see in the trailer is Soldier Boy being woken up like he was in hibernation. It looks like they pull him out of a lengthy sleep whenever he’s needed. Now, he’s needed to take out Butcher and his team.
With Soldier Boy comes Payback. We see one of them during the trailer and she looked like Marvel’s Scarlet Witch. The Boys fought Payback in the comics and almost took casualties before Butcher went solo and killed most of them. That’s likely going to happen here as well.
The one character they’re missing is Stormfront. She may have lost all her limbs, but who knows, she could return with cybernetic arms. The show is wacky like that. Or, maybe we’ll see a new Stormfront brought in to take her place. We’ll just have to wait and see.
