WandaVision brought Vision back to life in two capacities, but is the character really back and will he return to the MCU?

Perhaps no TV series has left viewers with as many questions as WandaVision. The Disney Plus series unleashed a brand new era for the Marvel Cinematic Universe when it premiered in January last year, but it didn’t just open a new chapter, it defined an era, hooking fans in a way that none of the previous MCU projects had before.

Among the many mysteries at its heart was the return of Vision. Paul Bettany’s beloved android, and his subsequent relationship with Elizabeth Olsen’s fan-favorite Wanda Maximoff had become a fixture of the MCU’s story, but the character met a sad end in Avengers: Infinity War when Thanos pulled the Mind Stone from his head.

His return in WandaVision initially left viewers with many questions. However, the series itself answered those questions before it bowed out, revealing that the Scarlet Witch had used her limitless ability to recreate him in her sitcom-like world in WestView.

The finale, however, left us with more questions about the fate of Vision as the White Vision showed up and, under orders of S.W.O.R.D. Tyler Hayward, tried to eliminate Wanda. That is, until he was stopped by the Westview Vision.

Is Vision alive at the end of WandaVision?

There have been a lot of unanswered questions about the return of Vision, but yes, technically, the character lives on in some capacity. While Wanda’s loving manifestation of the character in Westview did perish when the Hex was taken down, he didn’t leave before restoring the White Vision’s memories, meaning that the original version of the character remembers everything about his former life before Thanos killed him.

Where he went remains to be seen. He’s not the original version of the character but he is technically the real version as he was reassembled out of the original’s parts and powered using Wanda’s chaos magic. With the memories of the original Vision now living inside his head, will he try to compute what it was like to die (twice) or will he rediscover his emotions even without possessing the Mind Stone? Is that even possible?

When will Vision return to the MCU?

It’s also unclear as to when Vision will return to the MCU. If we’re going with the Westview version of the character, he could always resurface in a project like Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness as Wanda is likely to be searching for her kids Tommy and Billy. And if they were created by the Hex, what’s to stop her from bringing back Vision too? After all, he did suggest they would meet again someday.

As for the White Vision, his return is a little more tricky. He flew off after his Westview doppelganger restored his memories, so he will likely have some computing to do in order to figure out his existential crisis. When he does overcome that, will he resurface in a story with Wanda or does the MCU have another long-term purpose for the character?

Either way, we likely haven’t seen the last of Paul Bettany in the MCU.
