Daredevil was one of Marvel’s most beloved shows, but why didn’t it get more than three seasons on Netflix?

The world is talking about Daredevil again. The Marvel Netflix series has long been a fan-favorite but it has found itself back at the forefront of many conversations since recent Marvel Studios properties like Spider-Man: No Way Home and Hawkeye generated plenty of conversations about it.

But that only restarted the conversation. In recent weeks, we’ve been talking about the show because it’s moving from its original home on Netflix to a new home on Disney Plus, with it and its fellow Marvel Netflix shows joining every other Marvel TV series on the latter streamer.

The show initially streamed on Netflix in 2015. Between then and 2018, it produced three acclaimed seasons and kicked off the shared universe that led to the likes of Jessica JonesLuke CageIron FistThe Defenders and The Punisher.

Why was Daredevil canceled by Netflix?

The cancelation of Daredevil (along with the cancellation of all the other shows) shocked the world, leaving us all with questions about why the successful franchise was scrapped. There was never really any clarity on the decision from either Netflix or Marvel, with both congratulating all involved for bringing the show to life after its conclusion and hinting at future stories for the character on the screen.

However, given that the showrunner was hoping for a fourth season, and that all of the shows were canceled in the same season, it was clear there was more to this story.

As for what that “more” was, well it seems that it was down to the inception of Disney Plus, which would debut a year after Daredevil‘s cancelation. According to Vincent D’Onofrio, who played Wilson Fisk on both Daredevil and Hawkeye, he and the cast were “not okay” after the decision was made but they understood and respected what “what Marvel was doing because Disney+ [was] coming out”.

Will Disney Plus make Daredevil season 4?

The irony to the whole situation is that Daredevil is now on Disney Plus with the rest of the shows that were canceled back then. Could this result in the streamer producing a fourth season? Rumors suggest that it is possible in the future, and it’s easy to see why. The character has come home to Marvel Studios. All of them have, in fact, so it’s definitely possible that their shows could see some form of continuation or reboot on Disney Plus.

It’s likely that we’ll see Charlie Cox as Matt Murdock again, but that return would now take place in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. But what MCU properties will he – and potentially the rest of the Marvel Netflix heroes – be involved in? Are continuations on the horizon, or will Marvel Studios have further plans to integrate the characters into their already-established narrative?
