Here’s how Ms. Marvel is the same and differs from her Marvel Comics counterpart.

We have all been waiting for a preview for Ms. Marvel on Disney Plus since the show was announced. Kamala Khan is one of one of the comic book world’s youngest stars. Like other up and comers like Marvel’s Miles Morales and DC Comics’ Naomi, there is a lot of potential with her character.

The first trailer for the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe show highlighted a lot of reasons why that is.

Ms. Marvel’s different vibe

From the very beginning of the Ms. Marvel trailer you can see the style is different from previous MCU projects. Hawkeye may have had the most comedy, but Ms. Marvel is bringing it in a different way.

The first thing this writer thought about was J.D. in Scrubs. J.D. would drift away into his mind and envision things in his life differently. Kamala is doing the same here, except her visions are more animated. The comic book bubbles, Devil horns on her classmate’s head, and the way she zoned out seemed like things J.D. would do. With Kamala, it makes more sense. She’s a young girl living in a reality with superheroes and it’s a world that she’s obsessed with. It also may be how she copes with the things that go on in her life.

Kamala Khan the Inspirational

"“It’s not really the brown girls from Jersey City that save the world” – Kamala Khan"

The Ms. Marvel trailer portrays the MCU’s Kamala in a similar way to her Marvel Comics counterpart. She can sometimes be insecure – something we notice from her thoughts on whether or not she can save the world. However, when the time comes, Kamala always steps up and fights without fear.

That will be the most important part of the show. Kamala is a proud Pakistani, Muslim woman. There aren’t any Muslim comic book heroes with their own show so this show is a major step forward for representation, and will undoubtedly be an inspiration to many, particularly to young, brown girls and boys.

They’ll see Ms. Marvel and know that they can be strong or that they can create their own characters that look like them. That’s the kind of inspiration Kamala already gives to the world as a comic book character. And we will see the impact this show has on fans who see it, as it will undoubtedly inspire them to follow their dreams, whether that’s becoming writers and creators or something outside of the creative field entirely.

Ms. Marvel’s powers

In the comic books, Kamala got her powers from the Terrigen Mist. It’s the same thing that gives the Inhumans their powers. And since she has Inhuman DNA, Kamala developed abilities. She could stretch and shrink, and she also has super strength and a healing factor. There’s probably more she can do and doesn’t even know.

The Ms. Marvel trailer, however, shows that her powers are different from the ones she possesses in the comic books. It was previously reported that Kamala’s powers wouldn’t be exactly like they are in the source material and we definitely see this in the trailer. Instead of stretching, she makes her fist big with glowing cosmic powers. We also see her using her new powers to walk on air – something she also couldn’t do in the comics. However, it appears she does have superhuman strength.

The other thing is how she got her powers. It looks like she received them from a bracelet. The new powers don’t bother this writer. The part that’s bothersome is how she got them. It would have been nice if she didn’t need the bracelet to access her powers. Although, things may not be what they seem. Kamala could be the only one who can use the bracelet. Sort of like Thor and his hammers Stormbreaker and Mjolnir. If that’s what’s going on, that would be a cool change to the character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
