During a press junket for LA Times en Español, director/writer of The Batman has stated he does not want to rush a sequel to the movie.

Hitting theaters on March 4, The Batman went on to amass $128.5 million in its domestic opening weekend, making it the second-best pandemic box office performer behind Spider-Man: No Way Home. While it is a bit early to determine whether it will receive a sequel, so far the reception has been mostly positive amongst critics.

Via LA Times en Español (H/T: Joblo), it was discovered that director/writer/producer Matt Reeves, does not want to rush into a sequel of the original standalone film. That is fitting since when he was signed on back in February 2017 with Warner Bros. Pictures to direct, it took him at least two years to perfect the screenplay before casting was complete. When asked about whether there will be a sequel Reeves then responded:

"“I think the first thing is a very long nap and here’s the thing, my feeling in doing the film was always that I would never treat it as chapter 1. Because chapter 1 assumes that there are more chapters. So what I wanted to do was to make this more a satisfying experience so that people could experience a new fresh version of a character that the world has loved for over 80 years.”“I think that if we succeed on that front, I know that I have a lot of stories I want to tell, and then we’ll do chapter 2, but not because we didn’t make this one a complete experience. Let’s just see what happens, let’s see the audience watch it. I hope they connect to it and if they do then yes there’s definitely more to do, and I will not be napping for too long.”"

Is The Batman a success?

At the time this editorial has been published, The Batman has garnered a US domestic gross of $306.1 million after recovering its gross by 6% more after its second opening weekend (which only dropped at over 50%) following its opening debut. It has grossed worldwide over $606.6 million against an approximate $192 million production budget.

Reeves’ ambitious detective noir-thriller has received mostly positive reviews from critics and favorable reception amongst moviegoers. It scored Certified Fresh with an 85% critics score and 88% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes and received an 8.2 from Metacritic based on 72 out of 100 from 68 critics whilst IGN gave it a 10/10 rating.

Centering on a young, but established caped-and-cowl crusader fairly early on in his crime-fighting career The Batman stars Robert Pattinson, Zoë Kravitz, Andy Serkis, Colin Farrell, Paul Dano, Jeffrey Wright, John Turturro, Barry Keoghan, Jayme Lawson, and Peter Sarsgaard.

Matt Reeves directs from a screenplay he co-wrote with Peter Craig. Reeves and Dylan Clark are producing for 6th and Idaho Productions in association with DC Films. Warner Bros. Pictures are distributing.
