The Flash and the 15 best superhero TV shows from the last 15 years
Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD
Year: 2013 – 2020
Seasons: 7
The very first of the modern day Marvel shows, Agents of S.H.I.E.LD. was ahead of its time in many ways. Centred on the character of Agent Phil Coulson, who we all got to know through his various appearances in the MCU movies of Phase One, it gave us a look inside Marvel’s most famous government agency as he put together a team of agents to take on the growing threats in the increasingly unusual world around them.
It seems that the show has been retroactively removed from MCU continuity, which is a real shame as fans deserve better than that, but that doesn’t take away from the show’s legacy as Marvel’s longest-running series, Clark Gregg’s spectacular performance and the fact that it’s an all-around good time that consistently defied the odds throughout its run.
Loki
Year: 2021 – present
Seasons: 1 (season 2 is happening)
Loki was one of 2021’s most anticipated offerings simply because it gave the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s beloved God of Mischief a chance at a starring role. And given that Tom Hiddleston was capable of stealing the show with just 15 minutes of screen-time in previous cinematic installments, that was an exciting prospect.
The six-part series was a compelling foray into the MCU’s timeline, taking the threads that Avengers: Endgame had only briefly touched upon and pulling them so that they would unravel completely. What you get as a result of that is a science fiction saga that gives us one of the greatest double acts in recent memory in Hiddleston’s Loki and Owen Wilson’s Mobius M. Mobius.
Agent Carter
Year: 2015 – 2016
Seasons: 2
Three years after Peggy Carter’s debut in Captain America: The First Avenger, we got Agent Carter. An espionage thriller set in the 1940s, it saw Hayley Atwell reprise her MCU role as Peggy broke down the barriers of her time period on her way to founding S.H.I.E.L.D. Its concept was fun and the execution, particularly of the first season, gave it a timeless quality that has only gotten better with age.
The show’s cancellation at the hands of ABC after just two seasons remains one of the most controversial in network TV history, and it’s a darn shame that the story never got the chance to continue. Here’s hoping that the MCU’s expansion onto Disney Plus will finally allow them to give this show the third season it deserves.
