The Avengers have found their newest member (and he will fight Mephisto)
By Mark Lynch
Nighthawk becomes an Avenger right on time to fight Mephisto on Earth-616 and across the multiverse.
Jason Aaron’s run on Marvel‘s Avengers has been a wild ride. It all started with the Avengers from one million B.C. fighting celestials. As the series went on, we saw that Mephisto was a big part of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes’ lives even back then, and it leads to the present time. How? With time travel of course.
Mephisto got Phil Coulson to create a team called the Squadron Supreme of America. They were supposed to replace the Avengers as the premiere team of America. The plan almost succeeded (read Heroes Reborn), but after losing (Heroes Return No. 1), the Squadron Supreme of America went their separate ways.
In Avengers No. 55, we learn that Kyle Richmond, a.k.a. Nighthawk, continued to fight the good fight – unlike his former teammates Hyperion and Power Princess. T’Challa has been keeping tabs on Kyle and confronts him about stepping down as American Ambassador of Wakanda. Kyle refuses to return because he feels he isn’t really a human. T’Challa tells him, “No god or devil gets to decide if we’re worth being called a man or not.” The two shake hands and depart.
Nighthawk becomes one of the Avengers
Nighthawk goes to a building where the Serpent Society are killing people to appease their devil Mephisto. That ritual is interrupted when Nighthawk beats them down. As he’s wrapping things up, however, the Avengers show up. Before they can talk to him, Mephisto arrives through a portal.
Through that portal, the group sees hundreds of Mephistos behind him. They all stare in fear at what they’re seeing. Before the Nighthawk could leave, Captain Marvel says that they’re going to need more Avengers. The team votes and Kyle Richmond becomes their newest member.
Now, the team is bigger than normal. It’s Captain America, Thor, Iron Man, Captain Marvel, Valkyrie (Jane Foster), Blade, Phoenix (Maya Lopez), Starbrand, Namor, Blade, and Nighthawk. This could be the most eclectic Avengers team since Luke Cage’s squad. Let’s see what they can do going forward.
