Inhumans: Iwan Rheon wants another chance at playing Maximus (and he deserves it)
By Mark Lynch
Iwan Rheon still wants to play Maximus of the Inhumans and this should happen.
You may know Iwan Rheon from Game of Thrones, in which he played Ramsay Bolton – one of the most disturbing and deplorable TV characters of all time. Considering the show he appeared in, that says a lot. When Iwan was cast as Maximus of the Inhumans it made sense to Marvel Comics fans. Maximus isn’t as full of bloodlust as Ramsay, but he’s just as sneaky.
If you watched the Inhumans back in 2017, then you saw how perfect a fit he was for the role. The problem is that the show suffered in the ratings department. Plus, there were a lot of flaws throughout the show. The biggest problem came when they took away some of the powers from the characters. After all, one of the things that makes the Inhumans interesting is their powers.
That said, this actually worked in Maximus’ favor. Part of his power is manipulation.
A return to Inhumans for Iwan Rheon
Maximius’ personality shines during Inhumans – so much so that Iwan Rheon deserves another chance to bring Maximus back in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Thankfully, the actor is more than up for reprising his role as Maximus.
In an interview with ComicBook.com, he revealed:
"“I’d love to do Maximus again. I think he’s a really interesting character. And also I feel a bit sorry for him because he is just stuck on the Moon still, but yeah, I’d love to do any of that stuff.”"
We haven’t seen enough of what Maximus Boltagon can do. He’s more than just a speaker. He’s so good with his abilities that he put a wedge between Black Bolt and Medusa – something no one has been able to do (check out Silent War for more on that).
Iwan Rheon showed us what he was capable of in Inhumans. Imagine what he could do given a bigger stage. Maximus could be a big time villain in the MCU. He doesn’t need the rest of the Inhuman Royal family. He could be the one working behind the scenes of a government. Forcing them to make laws that put heroes in danger. Or, maybe he’s whispering in the ear of one of the Avengers causing a new Civil War.
With Maximus’ power set and Iwan Rheon’s acting ability, this could be a new level of villains we haven’t seen. One who doesn’t need to be physical to dominate.
