Bad Bunny is the newest Spider-Man star for Sony’s Marvel universe
By Mark Lynch
Bad Bunny is next in line to play a Spider-Man character for Sony’s Marvel Comics division.
Sony Pictures Marvel division produced two Venom movies and Morbius. All three films debuted at No. 1 at the box office. Morbius was the most shocking. It received a lot of criticism from comic book fans before the movie came out. The reviews weren’t much better. To make things worse, Morbius had a significant drop in the box office in its second weekend. It was as bad as Dark Phoenix.
Sony has been trying to capitalize on its Marvel franchise over the last few years. Projects like Kraven the Hunter and Madame Web were all announced within a year. Variety reports that another Spider-Man character will be getting a movie. This time it’s El Muerto and he’ll be played by one of the most popular artists in the world, Bad Bunny.
Picking Bad Bunny was a smart move for Sony
If you don’t know about El Muerto, don’t feel bad. He was only in two issues of Friendly Spider-Man. After that, he disappeared. And, if this writer is being honest, it wasn’t a memorable appearance. J. Jonah Jameson hired him to fight Spider-Man in a mask vs mask match where the loser would reveal their secret identity. Spidey won after his talons accidentally knocked out and paralyzed his opponent.
Bad Bunny is an international, award-winning, megastar. His concerts sell out all over the world and he’s known as a great person. He entered another fandom when he was an in-ring competitor at WrestleMania in 2021 and in the 2022 Royal Rumble. Him playing El Muerto is a smart move.
Fans of Bad Bunny will run to the theater to see the movie just because he’s a star. And, considering El Muerto was a wrestler and Bad Bunny loves the wrestling industry, it all makes sense. Plus, he seems to be excited about the role. That excitement will go a long way when production starts.
This is another weird move from Sony. It’s another Spider-Man character that most comic book fans don’t remember or care about. It makes no sense. Nevertheless, this writer loves that a Latin character is getting a lead in a Marvel Comics movie. Don’t be shocked when he makes his return to Marvel Comics as a Spider-Man character in the next couple of years.
Stay tuned for more news on El Muerto and Bad Bunny as they develop.
