New promotional footage for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness dropped a major X-Men ’97 reference which has raised eyebrows among audiences.

After Spider-Man: No Way Home, it didn’t seem possible that Marvel would be able to outdo itself with a film featuring more surprise cameos than those seen in the Spider-Man film. However, this is Marvel we’re talking about.

The studio is primed to break open the Multiverse in its upcoming release Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, a film that is expected to feature appearances from some of Marvel’s biggest characters.

From alternative versions of beloved characters previously introduced in the Marvel Cinematic Universe to new characters not yet seen in the MCU, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness promises to be one of Marvel’s craziest and biggest movies yet! There have been countless theories about who could return for the film including the longtime leader of the X-Men, Professor Charles Xavier.

While Professor X’s role was first teased in the Multiverse of Madness Super Bowl spot, a new teaser for the film seems to suggest we’re about to meet a very different version of the character previously introduced in FOX’s X-Men universe. One whose inspiration seems to draw heavily from the iconic X-Men ’97 animated series!

In a new teaser released by the Marvel Studios Canada YouTube, which has since been removed, viewers get a clearer glimpse at Patrick Stewart’s return as Professor X and the version we’re about to meet in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is giving off serious X-Men ’97 vibes!

During the brief teaser, we’re treated with a clear shot of Professor X’s signature yellow hoverchair which the character famously used in the beloved ’90s animated series and many comic book adaptations. Not only is Stewart’s Professor X using the signature hoverchair, but he seems to also be donning a green-hued jacket we often saw the character rocking in the animated series.

While it’s unlikely the character featured in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness shares a connection to the character from the animated series, the similarities in the two looks is quite exciting and has created even more anticipation over his arrival in the MCU!
