DC’s Legends of Tomorrow will sadly not be getting an eighth season; the CW has officially canceled the show.

This one hurts. Legends of Tomorrow has been cancelled after seven seasons.

Legends was the show that never took itself too seriously but stuck to the “Three Hs” principal many of the Arrowverse shows had: heroics, humor, heart. Many of these superhero shows on The CW have had ups and downs—normal for TV shows with 20+ episodes—but Legends never felt like that. It was a show that always had a lower episode count, averaging 15-16 episodes a season. It thrived, each season, with a lower episode count, often with weird and zany storylines. Legends of Tomorrow was very much the heart and soul of the Arrowverse.

Heartbreak for Legends of Tomorrow

News of the show’s cancellation was first dropped when co-showrunner, Keto Shimizu, revealed the show’s fate on Twitter.

From a fan’s perspective, it hurts to see a long-running show that ended with a cliffhanger not be giving a proper goodbye; something The CW generally does with its longer-running series. According to Deadline sources, these characters can easily populate other DC Arrowverse shows (or what’s left of them anyway). There is a chance we’ll get to see certain characters come back and wrap up their storylines, though I’d imagine it’s a small one.

Bam Smack POW’s associate editor, Michael Patterson, took to Twitter to spotlight something so great about this show that I think is the perfect encapsulation of why Legends was so wonderful. This show, the cast, the crew spent the last seven seasons defying expectations, reinventing itself nearly every year. It was the very definition of The CW’s motto: “Dare to Defy”. Legends of Tomorrow dared to defy, year in and year out.

The show was built in such a way that the cast could rotate in and out easily. There was always one constant though, Caity Lotz. Lotz played Sara Lance, originally on Arrow before moving to Legends (and appearing on plenty of other Arrowverse shows), and was the only original cast member left from season 1. She had this to say on her Instagram Story:

"“So, you guys probably heard the news that there’s not gonna be another season of Legends and I’m bummed and upset; I’m gonna miss it so much. I’m gonna miss our amazing cast and crew but at the same time, I recognize how lucky I have been to be able to place Sara Lance for this long. Working on Legends has been amazing, and it’s been such a journey and I am so endlessly grateful to it and to you guys. Thank you, all the Legends of Tomorrow fans, out there we love you guys so much and it has been a blast.”"

Legends of Tomorrow will be missed, especially around here. “Once a Legend, always a Legend.”

Next. DC’s Legends of Tomorrow is the Arrowverse at its very best. dark
