Is Doctor Strange the Sorcerer Supreme?
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is mere days away from being released. Soon all will be answered, but is there anything we can answer now?
It’s hard to believe that it’s been eight years since we first met Doctor Strange, portrayed by Benedict Cumberbatch. What may be even harder to believe is that Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is only the second standalone film for the character. In the eight years since his debut in Doctor Strange, his presence has been incredibly crucial in both wrapping up the Infinity Saga and kicking off the Multiverse Saga.
While Multiverse of Madness is only the second movie in the Doctor Strange franchise, the character is a crucial part of Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. Those two films tied up over 10 years, 22 films, of storytelling. Doctor Strange is the one that sees that out of the millions of different possibilities of stopping Thanos, only one will succeed. He and Wong then opened up numerous inter-dimensional portals in the final battle against the Mad Titan.
Phase 4 has introduced the multiverse. Loki may have first cracked the idea open, but Doctor Strange (with a little blame toward Peter Parker) opened up the gateways to other universes in Spider-Man: No Way Home. The true ramifications of the spell Strange used in that movie will truly be felt this Friday when Multiverse of Madness debuts.
Is Doctor Strange the Sorcerer Supreme?
No Way Home left us with many questions, as have the trailers for Multiverse of Madness. Doctor Strange’s second solo-outing should answer some of them, but if you’re wondering if the good Doctor is still running around as the Sorcerer Supreme, we can answer that without hesitation today. It’s a quick throw-away line in No Way Home, but the topic of the mystic title came up when Peter first visited Strange.
As it turns out, no, Doctor Stephen Strange is no longer the Sorcerer Supreme. When he blipped away at the end of Infinity War, the role needed to be filled. And that role/title was given to none other than Wong. One suspects that the throw-away line about this in No Way Home was so it didn’t have to be addressed in Multiverse of Madness.
And while the trailers have not necessarily made it a point of contention for Doctor Strange and Wong, one would also suspect that it’ll come up in this next movie. Does that mean Strange will once again become the Sorcerer Supreme? We’ll have to wait a few more days to find out.
Benedict Cumberbatch, Benedict Wong, Elizabeth Olsen, and many more star in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, directed by Sam Raimi and in theaters everywhere this Friday, May 6, 2022.
Do you think Doctor Strange will become the Sorcerer Supreme again in Multiverse of Madness? Or will Wong continue as the Sorcerer Supreme due to Strange’s indiscretion with the multiverse? Let us know in the comments below!
