Is Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness the last appearance of the Scarlet Witch, a.k.a. Wanda Maximoff?

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is upon us. The long-awaited 28th installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it sees Benedict Cumberbatch return to the MCU as the cloak-wielding Doctor Strange in a bid to protect the multiverse from a new threat. Joining him are fellow MCU returnees Elizabeth Olsen and Benedict Wong, as well as Xochitl Gomez in her debut as America Chavez.

There has been a lot of intrigue surrounding the plot of the Sam Raimi film, which other than the titled-based synopsis, has remained pretty much unknown. And one of the most intriguing aspects of it has been what kind of role Olsen’s Wanda Maximoff, now the Scarlet Witch, would play.

The movie’s release is here and for those who have already seen it, it’s a mystery no more. If you haven’t seen it, and you’d still like to know the fate of the Scarlet Witch, keep reading.

What happens to Wanda Maximoff in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness?

Wanda’s evolution into the Scarlet Witch took a dark turn thanks to her use of the Darkhold, resulting in her becoming the film’s main antagonist. But in her desire to find alternate versions of her children, she never stopped to think about the other Wandas she would have to take away to do it.

Upon seeing the damage she was doing laid out in front of her (in the form of her own children’s fear), she decided to destroy the Darkhold across all universes, bringing down Wundagore Mountain – the place where the Darkhold’s spells were first written. And, by the looks of things, she too was buried underneath it.

Is Wanda Maximoff really dead after Doctor Strange 2?

The truth is that Wanda’s fate currently remains a mystery. It does look like she died, as Wundagore Mountain collapsed on top of her, but it’s unlikely that Marvel Studios would kill off the Scarlet Witch when she had finally evolved into her comic book counterpart.

With that in mind, it might be a long time until we see Wanda resurface. But it’s also important to remember that she probably will resurface at some point. She has a lot of emotional trauma to deal with, and she will have to come to terms with the fact that she killed countless people throughout Multiverse of Madness. And a fake-out death might just give her the time to do that, before a potential redemption arc could see her use her newfound abilities for good.

What awaits the character? We don’t know. So for now, we wait, and hope that Marvel finds a way to bring the Scarlet Witch back.
