Marvel Comics: The Punisher and Ares are on a collision course to war
By Mark Lynch
The Punisher and the God of War Ares will be battling for the title of Marvel’s true Lord of War.
It’s debatable when Frank Castle became the Punisher. Was it in Vietnam like Garth Ennis wrote in Punisher: Born or was it the day his family died during their lunch in Central Park? Whatever you believe, Frank Castle has waged an endless war on crime for decades.
After slaughtering hundreds if not thousands of violent criminals for years, Marvel‘s Punisher was approached by The Hand. Before their request, they brought his wife back to life as part of a deal. He would become their Lord. Frank accepted on another condition: The Hand could only kill people who deserved it. The Hand agreed and The Punisher began his time running The Hand.
The first mission readers see him on came at the expense of zealots of the God of War (Punisher 1 of 12). If you know Marvel Comics, the assumption was that their god was Ares, the Greek God of War. That was an accurate guess. During issue No. 2 (of 12) of Punisher, one of Ares’ followers attempted to give a gun as an offering to Castle and The Hand. Having failed that, he tried to kill the Punisher. That also didn’t work. Since neither option was a success, Ares said, “War it is.”
Punisher vs Ares
This is the Marvel Comics battle readers didn’t know they needed. Ares has been waging war on gods and mortals for eons. He’s durable, has superhuman strength, and most likely knows how to use every weapon known to man. That would give Ares an advantage against anyone. Unfortunately for Ares, Frank Castle is no normal man.
The Punisher has done things that would even impress the Ares. On top of that, Frank Castle has started getting powers. The Hands’ “god” the Beast has started giving him abilities. Among them is sensing weapons and violent intentions towards him. Who knows what else he can do.
This is going to be one of the best and perhaps most brutal battles Marvel Comics’ readers have ever witnessed. So strap in. This is going to get bloody.
