Rumors have come and gone about the future of Captain Marvel but is Brie Larson actually leaving the MCU?

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is full of A-list stars, many of whom portray some of the most beloved Marvel heroes. It’s been that way ever since the role of Tony Stark turned Robert Downey Jr. into the biggest name in Hollywood, and it has grown immensely ever since.

One major star who recently stepped into the super suits of the MCU is Brie Larson. The Oscar-winning actress portrays Carol Danvers, a.k.a. Captain Marvel, in the character’s self-titled solo movie – which hit theaters in 2019. She has since reprised the role in Avengers: Endgame and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.

As with every actor in a long-running franchise, rumors have come and gone about when Brie might exit the MCU as the character, but is there actually any truth to it?

Is Brie Larson still Captain Marvel in the MCU?

Yes, Brie Larson is still Captain Marvel in the MCU and will remain so for as long as she and Marvel Studios wish to bring the character back. She has not been replaced and will indeed reprise her role as Carol Danvers in upcoming sequel The Marvels.

It isn’t particularly clear where this rumor originated from but it likely has something to do with the fact that there are other characters to hold the Captain Marvel title in the comics and that one of them will appear in the upcoming sequel. We are, of course, referring to Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris), who previously appeared in WandaVision where she evolved into the hero known as Photon.

Meanwhile, a character many consider Carol’s successor in the comics, Kamala Khan, will headline her own Disney Plus series in the upcoming Ms. Marvel, before actress Iman Vellani then reprises the role in The Marvels alongside the other two heroes.

In spite of all of that, it’s important to note that Brie Larson’s Carol Danvers remains Captain Marvel, as Monica has seemingly become Photon, while Kamala is Ms. Marvel. And we can’t wait to see all three of them in action!

The Marvels arrives in movie theaters on July 28, 2023.
