Disney Plus is hot off its latest success Moon Knight. A character that few people knew about. Thanks to Oscar Isaac, Moon Knight, Marc Spector, and Steven Grant were trending online for weeks. Now, Marvel Studios will attempt to take a newer Marvel Comics character and make her a star. On Wednesday June 8, Iman Vellani will debut as Kamala Khan a.k.a. Ms. Marvel.
Kamala Khan is a high school Muslim girl with a love for superheroes. Captain Marvel (Carol Danvers), in particular, is her favorite. She has pictures of her on her wall. The show’s trailer even shows her dressing like her. This is very close to the origin story of Ms. Marvel in the comic books. It could be where the similarities stop.
Unlike Marvel Comics, Kamala’s powers don’t come from the Inhumans’ Terrigen Mist. It looks as if they’re bands from her grandmother. This could possibly mean that this is a lineage that’s been in their family for generations. A new and relatable concept. Or this could be an homage to Captain Marvel and Rick Jones’ Nega-Bands.
What to expect from the Ms. Marvel premiere
Marvel Studios and Disney Plus did a great job of showing what the series was going to be in the trailers. This is an example of how to avoid a mistake that The CW’s Naomi made. This isn’t going to be like any of the other Marvel Studios projects. It’ll be more of a teenage superhero show than an action packed series. Something fans will appreciate going in.
All of the animated things that popped up and Kamala’s exuberant personality will also ensure the show will be different from anything Marvel has done. There have been cheery characters, but not like this. Kamala’s overall positive attitude is a major shift from Moon Knight, Loki, or even Kate Bishop. Because of that, Ms Marvel won’t be for everyone.
This series is going to be more for a younger crowd. However, that doesn’t mean the show won’t be enjoyable. It means the feeling will be happier and more uplifting than previous Marvel Studios shows. Ms. Marvel will fit in perfectly with the theme of the Disney Plus streaming service. It’s also a great show to transition into She-Hulk.
