Leslie Jones cast in the role of a gender-swapped Plastic Man
SNL and Ghostbusters star, Leslie Jones, has been cast as a female version of Plastic Man.
According to most recent accounts through Variety, comedian and the current host of Supermarket Sweep plus rising actress, Leslie Jones, is attached to lead the voice cast of an adult-orientated animated comedy series based on Plastic Man. The animated project, entitled Plastic, will see Jones voice a new female version of the character.
For years, a Plastic Man film was languishing in development hell despite the character’s comedic appeal to fans. Mighty Morphin Power Rangers director, Bryan Spicer, was set to helm the film adaptation. It was green-lit off the backend of Tim Burton’s Batman in ’89 during the early 90s. Amblin Entertainment was set to produce and the screenplay was penned by The Wachowskis in 1995. It was unceremoniously shelved.
Subsequent attempts to adapt the property were met with trivial and unfortunate results during the late 2000s when The Wachowskis decided to update their old draft of the script. A Plastic Man film initially was meant to drop in 2009 however that year came and went with nothing to show for it. Actors considered at the time were Jim Carrey, Bruce Campbell, and Keanu Reeves.
Thereafter, in 2018, the development of a new Plastic Man film had show some promise. Amanda Idoko was announced to be writing the film’s script and Robert Shaye was attached as executive producer. Since then, Cat Vasko had been attached to rewrite Idoko’s draft of the script which has been reworked into a female-led movie.
Leslie Jones as the Plastic Woman?!
So far, this is unrelated to the female-centered Plastic Man film project. Jones is also set to executive produce the series in addition to star. Plot details of Plastic are kept under wraps and a writer has yet to be affiliated with the project it is uncertain as to who will be chief executive producer/story editor to helm Plastic.
Created by writer/artist, Jack Cole, Patrick “Eel” O’Brian aka Plastic Man made his debut in Police Comics No.1 in 1941 for Quality Comics (later acquired by DC Comics). Three years after Superman was published in Action Comics No.1 and Batman the following year thereafter in Detective Comics No.27, respectively.
Formerly a criminal, O’Brian attempted to rob a chemical plant with his gang, but he was betrayed and shot by his own crew. During the scuffle, when he attempted to avoid being apprehended by police O’Brian was exposed to an unknown chemical during the shooting. He gained the ability of superhuman elasticity, malleability, and durability among many other plastic-induced abilities.
