Amber Heard portrayed Mera in the DCEU breakout film Aquaman, but will she be returning to play the role in upcoming sequel Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom?

Aquaman is the most successful DC Comics movie ever made. That’s not a figure of speech or an analysis on the film’s success, it’s a fact, as the Jason Momoa film broke out at the global box office when it was released in December 2018, grossing $1.148 billion worldwide.

While future stories centered on Arthur Curry and Atlantis were possible given that Aquaman is part of the DCEU, the film’s unexpected levels of success meant that a sequel was inevitable.

However, there has been a lot of speculation about whether Amber Heard would reprise her role as the first film’s leading lady, Mera.

Has Amber Heard been recast in Aquaman 2?

In spite of the rumors, Amber Heard was always expected to reprise her role as Mera in Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. In fact, the star appeared in a brief behind-the-scenes reel showcased at DC FanDome 2021, confirming that she did indeed film scenes for the film and that she would be back.

However, a recent report from Just Jared has thrown her role in the film into question as it suggests that Warner Bros. plans to recast the role following a recent test screening for the movie. As reported by The Direct, reshoots will be taking place with Jason Momoa and Nicole Kidman, with Heard reportedly being recast for the sequel and any potential future DCEU appearances for Mera.

Amber Heard’s representatives have slammed the report, casting doubt on it with a statement released to People that states “the rumor mill continues as it has from day one — inaccurate, insensitive, and slightly insane.”

It’s also important to note that Warner Bros. has not confirmed this report, so it’s best to take any recast rumors with a pinch of salt until an official statement is made. That said, Heard herself revealed that she didn’t even know if she would be in the final cut of the film as it was “difficult to stay in the movie”.

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is set to be released on March 17, 2023.
