“It’s like some kind of death cult, but their leader is an all-powerful psychopath!” Spoilers for Superman and Lois season 2, episode 14 follow.

Ally has drained Superman’s powers, leaving him in place that he never though he’d be: Living as a human.

While the Kents and Irons try and figure out to get his powers back, Ally’s plans to merge the two worlds is going full-speed ahead.

Here’s everything that went down in Superman and Lois season 2, episode 14 “Worlds War Bizarre”.

Superman and Lois season 2 episode 14 review

Recovery

As Clark is recovering from Ally’s attack, the question remains though, is he actually recovering? And well, the simple answer to that is no, no he’s not. Turns out, his cells simply aren’t being recharged by the sun. But the problem is deeper than that. His cells have been completely changed and need to heal. And well, until he’s healed at said cellular level, he won’t  get his powers back, leaving John Henry, Nat, and Jordan to fend for themselves.

As everything is unfolding, we really get to see Clark getting frustrated over his inability to do anything, which is something that everyone can relate to. Powerless Superman is something that has been done plenty of times before, but there’s something different about the way that this episode does it.

There’s no easily solution presented toward getting his powers back. No sudden on/off switch for him to suddenly be more powerful than he was before. None of that is here and it makes his powerlessness actually feel impactful. This also leads to Clark having a conversation with Sam where he basically says that Superman shouldn’t have saved him and it ends with one of the best Superman lines ever: “Saving a life is never a mistake.” Pure Superman in every way.

Plus, Clark feeling helpless because he can’t do more is such a real feeling that almost everyone feels at some point, so seeing Superman like that? It hurts. It hurts a lot. At the end of the day though, he’s Superman, powers or not, and because of that he can still do something (something that is also relatable). Seeing him going to help Lana, without powers, and giving an inspirational speech to the town of Smallville in order to calm them is such a great Superman moment. It shows what the symbol on his chest means, hope, rather than simply having it said that it’s what it means.

Incoming dictator

Immediately though, because of her newfound power after absorbing all of Superman’s, Ally begins to meld the two universe together. Honestly, it starts out unsettling as a square, red sun appears in the sky, but the end, where Bizarro-Earth is phasing onto Earth, it becomes terrifying. The fact that this brand-new character made specifically for the show has become the most terrifying villain in the Arrowverse is insane.

Because of all this, there is now a race against the clock as there is less than 12 hours before the merging completes. So, with Superman obviously out of commission, John Henry goes in to face Ally alone, leaving Nat behind to protect everyone else, which is a good thing. But when Nat loses contact with her dad, seeing her go to the Kent house, and even cry in Lois’ arms, it’s heartbreaking and a fantastic full-circle moment for her arc.

On the ground

As for the regular people in Smallville, Lois and Chrissy decide to tell Lana the truth, which she then tries to pass along to the people of Smallville, but they won’t listen, especially thanks to the former, despicable, mayor. That is until Superman comes to help her in the scene referenced above. It’s genuinely infuriating that they weren’t listening to her and you can’t help but want to punch the former mayor in his smug face, which means that the scene was pulled off well.

In its penultimate episode, Superman and Lois season 2 continues to be the fantastic show that it’s been from the beginning.

Superman and Lois season 2 returns to The CW next Tuesday, June 28, at 8:00 p.m. ET to air its season 2 finale.
