The Flash season 8 explained: Is [SPOILER] really dead?
The Flash season 8 concluded with an epic battle between old foes, but it had drastic effects on Central City. Are we saying goodbye to a longtime Flash character (for good this time)?
The Flash season 8 has seen Barry Allen once again confronted by his old archenemy Eobard Thawne. The Reverse-Flash was the architect of Armageddon, a parallel dimension that somehow turned the Scarlet Speedster into the villain. But when good prevailed over evil, Thawne was left without speed and vowed revenge.
The Reverse-Flash himself never got that revenge on his own, but with the unexpected help of the Negative Forces, he managed to pull it off, destroying the redeemed Eobard from the Flashpoint timeline and reviving himself (and his speed) in the process.
The season finale, “Negative, Part Two”, was all about that ultimate battle between the two speedsters as Thawne was desperate to prove that he had gotten faster than his foe. But it had drastic consequences on Central City and, well, him too.
What does it mean for the future of the
show?
Does Reverse-Flash die in The Flash season 8?
Hellbent on defeating Barry once and for all by proving that he was faster than him, Eobard – now supercharged by the Forces – attempted to taunt him into one last battle. It worked, for a moment, as an enraged Barry, thinking Iris was dead, would stop at nothing to finally put his archenemy down. And with the help of the returning Positive Forces, he almost did it.
However, upon realizing that Iris was alive and that he was better than Thawne, he decided to stop this race that the pair had been running for close to a decade by doing nothing. Unable to accept that, Thawne tried to overcharge himself again, but it became too much for even him, and he screamed in pain before disappearing into the atmosphere.
Is this truly the last of the Reverse-Flash? There is merit in that possibility as Season 8 went out of its way to set up that final battle between the two, giving the finale a very series finale feel. That said, let’s not forget that Thawne has been killed over and over again and that usually ends with him disappearing in some painful way or another (in season 6 he also disappeared into the atmosphere).
The truth is that the Reverse-Flash has overcome being erased from the timeline, chased by Time Wraiths, the Crisis of the multiverse and multiple deaths, so if The Flash has at least one more season left in it, you can bet that we’ll see Tom Cavanagh (or Matt Letscher) reprise the role at least one more time.
Do you think the Reverse-Flash is really dead on The Flash season 8 or do you think he will come back in season 9 (or before the show concludes)? Let us know in the comments below!
