What If…? season 2 is not coming to Disney Plus in July 2022

Marvel’s What If…? season 2 will make its presence felt on screens at some point, but don’t be expecting it to premiere on Disney Plus this month.

Marvel’s What If…? had the unique aspect of being the first ever Marvel Studios-produced animated series. That was definitely an advantage in some ways, but it was also a lot of pressure as it meant that it had to succeed, especially because of what it was exploring. As we’ve come to expect with Marvel, though, it was a roaring success.

Premiering on Disney Plus last summer (after three live-action shows set within the Marvel Cinematic Universe), What If…? reimagined the MCU in a multitude of different ways, giving us a glimpse at what alternate worlds outside of Earth-616 look like. And with that, MCU fans were introduced to the multiverse, setting the stage for two live-action properties that would come next.

However, if you’re looking forward to seeing Captain Carter, Supreme Doctor Strange and the rest of the Guardians of the Multiverse, you may have to wait a little longer, as they certainly won’t be returning this month. Disney Plus has released its line-up for the month of July and What If…? is not on there.

Does What If…? season 2 have a release date?

Marvel has yet to announce the release date for What If…? season 2. The show tends to swap in and out with the ongoing live-action Marvel Studios shows, and with Ms. Marvel coming up in June, and She-Hulk likely arriving sometime in the fall, it will likely be some time before new episodes of What If…? premiere on Disney Plus.

At the moment, What If…? season 2 is still expected to have a 2022 release, but there have been some reports in recent months suggesting that it might be held until 2023.

This obviously contradicts the creative team’s hopes to release new seasons of the animated series annually, but with the amount of time animated shows can take to produce, it would be understandable if Marvel Studios opted to release next year instead.

For now, we’ll just have to wait and see.
