Destin Daniel-Cretton plus Community and Brooklyn Nine-Nine Andrew Guest have been hired by Marvel Studios to produce a Wonder Man series for Disney Plus.

It seems yet another Marvel character that has been left to obscurity for over decades-long of the comic book publisher’s history will make his live-action debut on the small screen of the Disney Plus streaming service.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Just Mercy’s Destin Daniel-Cretton and Community scribe, Andrew Guest, have teamed up to develop a Wonder Man television adaptation.

While Guest will serve as head writer, Cretton is attached executive producer, through his deal with Marvel Studios and Hulu’s Onyx Collective – on the Wonder Man series. Cretton the filmmaker behind Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is developing a sequel to the martial arts-inspired 2021 superhero film starring Simu Liu, Awkwafina, Michelle Yeoh, Benedict Wong, and Tony Leung.

Who is Wonder Man?

I know what you’re probably thinking… no this character is not one of the Big Two’s attempts to gain one-upping on the rival comic book publisher. Plus is not a carbon copy of DC’s primary superheroine, one-third of the trinity and Amazonian. Far from it, in fact, the man known as Simon Williams was an Avenger.

Created by Stan Lee and artists Don Heck and Jack Kirby, Wonder Man made his debut in Avengers Vol. 1 No.9 in 1964. Formerly a villain, he actually had a grudge against Tony Stark and his company Stark Enterprises (formerly called Stark Industries) Simon was transformed into an ionic being by Baron Zemo and infiltrated the Avengers.

Wonder Man appeared sporadically throughout the late 60s to the 70s, until he became a founding member of the West Coast Avengers based in Los Angeles. This is when he really stood out when the creative team at Marvel made him a celebrity, actor, and stuntman.
