Thor: Love and Thunder: All 5 deaths (ranked by most heartbreaking)
2. Gorr the God Butcher
You know that a movie has done a great job with its villain if it manages to make you feel sorry for them after they’ve spent the whole film being irredeemable. Thor: Love and Thunder pulls it off with Gorr the God Butcher who, in spite of being awful in every way and terrifying in every scene, has one of the most tragic backstories in the whole MCU.
Having lost his daughter and his people after the Gods turned their back on them, he vowed to destroy all Gods. But when presented with the chance to wipe them all out via a wish-granting being in Eternity, he chose Love instead, bringing his daughter back to life.
As he lay dying, he got the chance to see his little girl alive and well, and knew that she would be taken care of by Thor. It was a truly heartbreaking moment for a character that really was one of the MCU’s most tragic.
1. Jane Foster / Mighty Thor
Jane Foster’s return to the MCU brought with it tears of joy, as Natalie Portman finally returned to the Thor franchise for the first time in almost a decade. More than that, Jane got the chance to become the Mighty Thor, showcasing how worthy she is by wielding Mjolnir. What audiences didn’t expect was to be crying tears of sadness before that new chapter in Jane’s life had ended.
Jane was diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer and even though Mjolnir temporarily removed the symptoms and gave her the power of Mighty Thor, it also absorbed her mortal energy, making it impossible for her body to fight her illness.
As she lay dying in Thor’s arms and the two shared a final goodbye, it was a truly soul-crushing moment on many fronts. For one, these two people were on the cusp of happiness again only to have it ripped away. And two, it really looked like the film might have seen Jane overcome her illness.
Jane Foster’s return was the best thing about Thor: Love and Thunder, but her death was the worst. It was, without question, the most heartbreaking moment of the entire film.
