Thor 4 spoilers: Does Jane Foster die in Love and Thunder?

Jane Foster’s return in Thor: Love and Thunder was years in the making, but does Mighty Thor make it out of the movie alive?

It’s been nine long years since we have seen new footage of Jane Foster in a Marvel movie. The character, portrayed by Natalie Portman, was a fixture of the first two Thor movies, but she didn’t return for the third film and has remained absent from the Marvel Cinematic Universe ever since.

But Jane finally returned in Thor: Love and Thunder, and in a huge way. Wielding the power of Mjolnir, she was transformed into the Mighty Thor, living up to her comic book destiny and showcasing how worthy she always was.

But what fate awaited Jane in Thor 4? Was she one of the film’s many casualties or did the Mighty Thor survive her showdown with Gorr the God Butcher?

What happens to Jane Foster in Thor 4?

In Thor 4, Jane Foster becomes the Mighty Thor after Mjolnir called out to her, summoning her to New Asgard. The MCU’s new hero, she played a vital role in helping Thor, Valkyrie and Korg stop the deadly Gorr the God Butcher.

However, Jane was also battling stage four cancer. Harnessing Mjolnir would temporarily keep her symptoms at bay but the hammer was also absorbing her mortal energy, making it impossible for her to battle her illness. Jane knew the risks of wielding the hammer one more time and did so to save Thor and the Asgardian children. And in the end, she succumbed to her illness, passing away in Thor’s arms after a tender moment between the two.

After that, Jane ends up in Valhalla – the paradisal realm where Gods go when they die in battle.

Is Jane Foster really dead after Thor: Love and Thunder?

Anything can happen in the MCU, so it’s highly possible that Natalie Portman’s Jane Foster could return in a future installment in the Marvel Studios shared universe. That being said, it does seem like Thor: Love and Thunder wanted to give Jane the earned high and mighty send-off she deserves.

There is always scope for a future reunion with Jane and Thor whenever he ends up in Valhalla at the end of his story, but given that we’ve been given the classic “Thor will return” tease after the post-credits scene, the God of Thunder’s story isn’t over yet. Then again, could the tease have been referring to Mighty Thor too?

We’ll have to wait and see of Jane returns in a future MCU film. We can only hope that she does. Portman was nothing short of fantastic in the role and it would be a shame to lose her when Mighty Thor’s journey was just beginning.
