Captain America 4 is happening and now we know who will be bringing it to the big screen.

Over a year after Captain America 4 was announced to the public, Marvel Studios finally secured their director for the highly anticipated fourth Captain America movie starring Anthony Mackie.

As revealed by The Hollywood Reporter, Julius Onah will direct the fourth installment in the franchise, making The Captain America franchise the second Marvel Cinematic Universe film series to get a fourth movie outside of the traditional trilogy — the first franchise to do this being Thor.

Who else is behind the scenes on Captain America 4?

Director Julius Onah is a Nigerian-American filmmaker known for Luce (Octavia Spencer, Naomi Watts), Don’t Look Back, and The Cloverfield Paradox (J.J, Abrams, Daniel Brühl, GuGu Mbatha-Raw). In addition, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier showrunner Malcom Spellman is penning the script with Dalan Musson.

The Captain America franchise is essentially starting from scratch, given that Joe Johnston (The First Avenger) and the Russo brothers (Winter Soldier, Civil War) are not in the creative process for the film. This will allow Sam Wilson’s arc to be achieved without major influence of the preceding films.

What could Captain America 4 be about?

There is not much revealed about the plotline for the fourth installment. What we do know however, is that the plot will surely be close to where we left off in the Disney+ series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.

In the series, there was a lot of back-and-forth as to whether Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) was ready to take on the shield that Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) had left behind for him. Towards the end, and after internal and external conflict — he finally wields the shield proudly, and will carry the mantle into the next era of the MCU. The movie didn’t come without its political triumphs, which is what made Sam Wilson the character he is. He’s not only fighting the mission but to ensure there is equity and fighting for the underrepresented groups that don’t have that voice.

There is no indication on when filming will begin, but given the timeline of previous projects we can guess that filming could possibly begin sometime next year. That said, it’s best to wait for official confirmation from Marvel Studios.
