The Flash season 9 is not coming to The CW in 2022

Don’t be expecting to watch The Flash season 9 on The CW this year.

With eight completed seasons to its name, The Flash is currently The CW’s longest-running show, and it’s about to extend that run. Renewed for its ninth season back in March, the show will continue the adventures of the Arrowverse’s Scarlet Speedster for at least another year.

It’s not all that surprising that the show lives to fight another day in spite of the network’s recent cancellation spree. It was the most-watched show on The CW for at least six of its eight seasons, breaking records in its first to become the network’s biggest hit ever, so it’s inevitable that the show is going to go on for as long as the cast and creative team want it to.

That said, don’t be expecting the show to return for its ninth season this year. Season 8 concluded in June but we already know that the show won’t air any new episodes for the remainder of the year, as The CW recently released its fall schedule just before its Upfronts presentation, and for the first time since its debut (with the exception of fall 2020 when there was little original content in the fall after the production shutdown), The Flash was not listed there.

With that in mind, when can fans expect the show to return?

The Flash season 9 will likely be released in early 2023. The fact that it’s being held for midseason makes a January premiere quite possible, but don’t be surprised if it debuts sometime later in that month or even in February or March as the spring schedule takes form.

In recent years, it has debuted or returned from its midseason hiatus in March, so that’s a real possibility, especially as it would allow any fall shows that perhaps still have a few episodes left to air early in the year to complete their runs.

Nonetheless, you can bet that Flash fans will be tuning in when Barry Allen returns for his ninth adventure!
