The Flash season 9 will be the long-running Arrowverse show’s final chapter.

The end is nigh for The Flash. The long-running Arrowverse series has been a staple of The CW’s programming for almost a decade, but it will conclude with its upcoming ninth season.

A spin-off of Arrow, the show premiered on The CW in 2014. The Grant Gustin-led series quickly went on to eclipse its predecessor, becoming the network’s biggest hit ever after just one season.

Arguably the most popular comic book/superhero series of all time, it’s credited as reviving interest in the genre on the small screen as fans tuned in to see Barry Allen take on evils like the Reverse-Flash, Savitar, Zoom, The Thinker and Godspeed. However, Team Flash will face just one more threat before Central City’s savior bows out with season 9.

The Flash season 9 could be the end of the Arrowverse

As reported by DeadlineThe Flash season 9 will be the show’s final season. It will also be shorter than previous seasons, running for just 13 episodes. There has been speculation about this for some time, especially when it was revealed a number of months back that Grant Gustin had capped his involvement at 15 episodes, making a shorter season inevitable.

While it’s not particularly shocking that a show on the air for as long as The Flash has been is ending, it does come with some shocking consequences. The show’s conclusion seemingly confirms the end of the Arrowverse, as its the last show under that shared universe umbrella left standing.

Originator Arrow concluded its eight-season run in 2020, while Black Lightning and Supergirl both bowed out in 2021 with four and six seasons respectively. This year saw the surprising cancellations of DC’s Legends of Tomorrow and Batwoman, as well as the confirmation that offshoot Superman and Lois isn’t actually set on the same Earth, leaving just The Flash to wave the Arrowverse flag.

There is a spin-off, Justice U, in development set to star David Ramsey’s John Diggle, meaning that the Arrowverse could live on, but there has yet to be any updates about that one.

Regardless of what the future holds for the Arrowverse, The Flash season 9 will be the end of an era.
