Batgirl canceled: DC movie won’t release in theaters or HBO Max (why it deserves better)
By Mark Lynch
Batgirl being canceled leaves fans with more reasons to never get excited about DC Comics’ movies.
DC Comics has had a tough go in terms of movies. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Justice League, and Suicide Squad (the first one) were all looked at as failures. While some were financially successful, the DCEU was not the success Warner Bros. wanted it to be – so much that it looked like the hope was The Flash would reset everything. Even that plan is up in the air with Ezra Miller’s recent arrests.
Unfortunately, there’s more horrible news for fans of the DCEU and DC Comics in general. As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, the Batgirl movie that cost $90 million will no longer be released in theaters or HBO Max. They also stated that Discovery CEO David Zaslav is, “prioritizing on cost-cutting measures and refocusing Warners on theatrical films.” Hopefully this is more than a financial decision because Warner Brothers Discovery aren’t doing themselves any favors.
Batgirl’s demise is just more disappointment for DC fans
Personally, this writer was looking forward to Batgirl. And so many others were too. Morbius, for all its faults, was still the No. 1 movie in the world when it was released. There is no reason to think Batgirl wouldn’t have been successful on HBO Max or in theaters. It would have been a great addition to HBO Max. The name alone will bring viewers. Knowing this is only part of what makes this disappointing.
Yet again, fans of DC Comics have been let down by Warner Bros. With the exception of some of the DC Comics shows on The CW, Harley Quinn, and The Batman, there isn’t a lot to look forward to from DC media.
Fans were anticipating Batgirl. They wanted to see how good Leslie Grace would be as Batgirl and Barbara Gordon. The return of J.K. Simmons as Jim Gordon and Michael Keaton as Bruce Wayne were more reasons to get excited. Now, fans will have more reasons to not trust DC Comics when projects are announced. The company spent $90 million dollars, wasted the time of the cast and crew, and failed Batgirl fans all over the world. Good work.
