Joker 2 release date set (and no, it’s not coming in 2022)

The Joker 2 release date has been set, but don’t expect the film to arrive in 2022… or 2023. Here’s what we know about when to expect Joker 2!

There is a lot of uncertainty regarding the future of the DC Comics television and movie franchise at the moment.

2022 has seen countless DC TV series canceled including, most notably, Legends of Tomorrow and Batwoman; received confirmation The Flash will be coming to an end with a shortened ninth season in 2023; seen projects such as The Flash movie and Aquaman 2 delayed; and found other projects scrapped entirely. Most recently, it was revealed that Discovery had made the decision to shelve HBO Max’s Batgirl movie — opting not to release the nearly completed project in any manner in order to pursue a tax break.

While it’s unclear what the future holds for many titles, one title that seems to be unaffected by Discovery’s recent acquisition of Warner Bros. is the upcoming sequel to Todd Phillips’ Oscar-winning Joker film which has officially landed a release date… one that’s much later than many anticipated.

Joker 2 is not coming in 2022

If you were hoping the sequel to 2019’s Oscar-winning Joker would be arriving in 2022, we have some bad news for you. The film’s sequel, Joker: Folie A Deux, will not be coming to HBO Max or movie theaters this year.

It’s definitely a bit disappointing given this year marks three years since the first film’s release, but isn’t too surprising given production is not set to begin until sometime in 2023. What is perhaps shocking is that the film won’t be coming in 2023 either, as Warner Bros. is looking to release the film five years after Joker‘s original release.

Joker 2 release date

Joker 2 is currently slated to open in theaters on Friday, Oct. 4, 2024 — exactly five years after the first film opened on Oct. 4, 2019. It’s important to note that the date is subject to change as Warner Bros. has been known to shuffle the release dates of its DC Comics properties and the release date has not been confirmed by the studio directly.

Instead, the release date has been confirmed by several media outlets including Deadline, who first broke the news after learning about the release date via an update in Comscore.
