Aquaman 2 and Shazam 2 release dates expected to be delayed (Rumor)
The last 24-48 hours have been a whirlwind of activity from Warner Bros. Discovery and it seems like both Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom and Shazam! Fury of the Gods may be affected next.
The downfall of the DCEU may have started with the cancellation of the Wonder Twins film, but the shot that was heard around the world was the announcement that Batgirl was canceled.
The $90 million dollar film was nearly complete, but Warner Bros. Discovery shelved the film. Rumors have suggested anything from tax cuts to poor test scores, but the bottom line is Batgirl will not be released anywhere.
To further complicate things, the cancellation of Batgirl puts Michael Keaton’s role within the greater DCEU in question. Will his Bruce Wayne/Batman be the Nick Fury of the DCEU? If earlier reports are true, probably not.
Where does that leave other DCEU projects that Warner Bros. Discovery has scheduled? Nothing is official until it comes from the studio, but rumors suggest that the next installments for Aquaman and Shazam! could be delayed.
Aquaman 2 and Shazam! Fury of the Gods potentially delayed
According to The Hollywood Reporter, rumors are circulating that Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom (currently scheduled for a March 17, 2023 release) and Shazam! Fury of the Gods (currently scheduled for Dec. 21, 2022) could be delayed. Why? There doesn’t seem to be much rhyme or reason to Warner Bros. Discovery’s reasoning. We could speculate a few things:
- The films aren’t done yet and need more time to finish potential reshoots and VFX.
- Warner Bros. Discovery wants to move those films to weekends with less competition.
- Depending on what they do with The Flash, they could be putting distance between a movie that a) has a lead that is currently unmarketable and b) features Keaton as Batman, whom they seem to be changing directions with.
Or it could do with taxes, we don’t really know! Warner Bros. Discovery has an earnings call on Thursday, August 4 where we’ll likely hear even more news about what’s happening with the DCEU, HBO Max, and other projects that the studio has going on.
