Netflix’s fantasy drama is back for a third season but will Locke and Key season 4 happen?

Netflix’s Locke and Key has become one of the most well-known supernatural shows on the streamer in recent years. Debuting back in February 2020, it has filled the Stranger Things-shaped hole in many people’s lives, airing its first two seasons between that show’s three-year break. Now, it returns to entertain fans all over again with its third season.

Based on the IDW horror comic series, the show stars Darby Stanchfield, Connor Jessup, Emilia Jones, and Jackson Robert Scott as the Locke family – all of whom find themselves thrown into a fantastical adventure when the house they move into, a.k.a. Keyhouse, literally opens doors to a realm of new possibilities (and dangers).

The first season was so successful that it warranted a two-season renewal, with seasons 2 and 3 being filmed back-to-back.

That said, with season 3 now available, what does the future hold for Locke and Key? Will there be another season, or is it really goodbye for the beloved series?

Will there be Locke and Key season 4?

Fans of Locke and Key have certainly enjoyed the show’s entertaining run over the last two years but there unfortunately won’t be a fourth season. While the show hasn’t been canceled (it was a popular addition to Netflix’s line up), the decision was made early on to end it after its third season.

Earlier this year, it was confirmed that season 3 would be the final season and co-showrunners Carlton Cuse and Meredith Averill released a statement explaining why the decision was made.

"“Once we began working on the series, we felt three seasons was the ideal length to bring the story of the Locke family and their Keyhouse adventures to a satisfying conclusion.”"

In an age where some shows go on too long and others never get the chance to reach their potential, there is an admirable quality in Locke and Key‘s decision to bow out when the creative team feel the story has been told.

Yes, it’s a shame that the Locke family’s on-screen adventures in Keyhouse are coming to an end, but it’s comforting to know that the show got the ending that was always intended for it.
