Robert Pattinson’s Dark Knight stunned audiences earlier this year but will he back for a sequel? Is The Batman 2 going to happen at Warner Bros. Discovery?

The Batman was one of the biggest success stories of the year. The much-anticipated reboot of the Dark Knight’s film franchise grossed $770 million at the box office and kicked off a whole new chapter in the DC Comics legend’s cinematic career.

Robert Pattinson donned the cape and cowl in a story that was very much geared towards the character’s detective nature, as Batman investigated the rise of the chilling Riddler. But, as is always the case in Gotham City, the story didn’t end there, as there is scope for a sequel.

The film’s success has seemingly made The Batman 2 inevitable, but if 2022 has taught us anything about Warner Bros., nothing is guaranteed – not even already-filmed big-budget DC movies.

There has been a lot of confusion about the future of DC films and which Dark Knights will be involved, so here is all we know about the status of Matt Reeves’ The Batman franchise.

Is The Batman 2 happening?

The Batman 2 is expected to happen, but recent developments at Warner Bros. Discovery suggest it might not come as quick as many were anticipating. According to a new report from Variety, a sequel has yet to be officially greenlit.

The good news is that the Matt Reeves project remains in development, so don’t automatically write the idea of a sequel off, but this does mean that it will likely be several years before The Batman 2 arrives in movie theaters.

The truth is that the landscape of Warner Bros. Discovery is in a state of flux right now, so nothing is certain. That’s something we all learned after the shocking cancellation of Batgirl‘s release. But given how successful The Batman was – both financially and critically – the sequel is more than likely going to happen. It’s the waiting that will be the hard part.
