Madame Web: New cast rumors tease major Marvel characters
We know that Zosia Mamet joins a star-studded cast for Sony’s Madame Web, but a host of new rumors suggest some exciting characters will appear in the film.
On Aug 3rd, it was officially revealed that actress Zosia Mamet would join Madame Web‘s cast as the film continues production in Boston.
In Sony Marvel fashion, there are no details on who the actress, who found breakout acclaim and praise due to her previous work on the HBO Max Emmy-Nominated series The Flight Attendant, is playing. Mamet is also known for work in Girls, Parenthood, and Mad Men.
But that’s not the only interesting item in terms of Madame Web casting. A new rumor reported by The Cosmic Circus may have just revealed who some of the other members of the cast are playing – and it all sounds very exciting.
As with all rumors, it’s important to take this with a grain of salt until Sony and Marvel make an official announcement, but here is what you need to know about the report.
Madame Web cast may be playing some major Marvel characters
According to the report, Dakota Johnson will play the titular character Cassandra Webb, who many know from the comics and various animated projects. In the comics, Madame Web is blind and linked to a life support system resembling a web, and her psychic abilities give her access to the Web of Life and Destiny. Of course, many speculated from recent set photos, including us, that Johnson could have been playing the Julia Carpenter version of the character, or another theory was that Sony blended both versions of Madame Web together for the film.
However, the report also suggests that Euphoria‘s Sydney Sweeney will actually be playing Julia Carpenter, and it’s not clear if the actress will be suiting up during the film. But from the details, and comments she has publicly stated it seems Sweeney could potentially a scene-stealer or fan favorite.
The report also claims that Celeste O’ Connor could be playing Mattie Franklin, a character from the ’90s who became Spider-Woman. Franklin first’s official comic appearance was Spectacular Spider-Man #262 back in 1998. If this turns out to be true, it’s exciting to know that O’ Connor could be stepping into the Marvel spotlight and that the breakout performance in Ghostbusters Afterlife is leading to more major roles.
In addition, Isabella Merced will reportedly play Anya Corazon. Now the actress made a name for herself in 2018 with her strong performance as the titular character in Dora and The Lost City Of Gold. The character Anya Corazon first appeared in Amazing Fantasy #1 (2004), better known as Araña or Spider-Girl, and her powers are also rooted in the mythological side of Spider-Man’s world.
The article also may have shed more light on who Adam Scott and Emma Roberts are playing. It claims that Scott will be playing a younger version of Uncle Ben, who is a paramedic (set photos previously surfaced showing Scott interacting with Johnson – to note, both dressed as EMTs, which could develop a sense of origin, again all food for thought).
Roberts is being labeled as his sister Mary Parker, a.k.a. Spider-Man’s mother. Recent set photos did confirm Roberts’ character is pregnant in the movie. Now, this article makes note of that and suggested that she could be pregnant with Peter, but the report did not reveal which version of the character or what universe this takes place in.
Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless wrote Madame Web, with Kerem Sanga penning an earlier draft. The film is slated for an October 6, 2023 release.
Before it hits theaters, though, J.C. Chandor’s Kraven the Hunter, starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson, will kick off Sony’s latest slate of Spider-Man-related projects on January 13, 2023.
