How did Leslie Grace respond to Batgirl’s cancellation by Warner Bros. Discovery?

The cancellation of Batgirl shocked the entertainment world to its core. The HBO Max film was supposed to hit the streaming service later this year until its plug was pulled by Warner Bros. Discovery after it had already completed primary production in March.

It was set to star In the Heights‘ Leslie Grace as the title character, with JK Simmons reprising his DCEU role as Commissioner James Gordon and Michael Keaton returning to the role of Batman for the second time in 30 years. But the $90 million feature was shockingly scrapped by Warner, with the studio deciding to use the film as a tax write-off.

What did Leslie Grace have to say about it? The star broke her silence a few days after the cancellation of Batgirl . Her response can be seen below:

Holding a positive and celebratory outlook in regards to the work they produced on Batgirl, Grace commented on how proud she was of “the love, hard work and intention all of our incredible cast and tireless crew put into this film over 7 months in Scotland”, acknowledging that she was so grateful to have been given the chance to play this role.

Grace’s statement came not long after the Batgirl directors, Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, expressed how “shocked” and “saddened” they were by the news after the former learned of this disappointing revelation whilst celebrating his wedding in Morocco.

It goes without saying that it must have been gut-wrenching to have spent all this time as a performer or crew member in production only to find out your several months of hard work will never see the light of day.

With Warner Bros. Discovery setting a new 10-year plan in place for the DCEU, changes were inevitable, but this one has received a lot of criticism given that production had been completed.

However, a recent report from

Variety

suggests that studio executives Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy are contemplating the possibility of Grace continuing to play the Batgirl character in another DC Film.
