Jen uses the word agnostic to describe GLK & H’s new Superhuman Law Division in She-Hulk episode 2, but what does agnostic mean in the context it’s used in?

She-Hulk episode 2 is streaming now on Disney Plus and there is a lot to process after watching the episode! Warning, there are episode 2 spoilers ahead!

As the episode begins, we get to see the fallout of Jen’s transformation into She-Hulk at the end of the season premiere and, unfortunately for Jen, things fall to pieces after the world learns her secret. After hulking to save those in the courtroom from Titania’s attack, Jen is fired from her job at the DA’s office.

While the DA’s office might not be happy with how Jen’s display cost them the case and the perception of her being a Hulk could be viewed, Jen managed to impress Holden Holliway, one of the senior partners of Goodman, Lieber, Kurtzberg & Holliway. Although Jen might not have won the case because of the judge’s decision to throw it out due to jury bias caused by her saving their lives as She-Hulk, Mr. Holliway recognizes that Jen was about to beat him in court and wants her to join his firm.

As we soon discover, the catch is that Mr. Holliway wants She-Hulk to be the face of the firm’s new Superhuman Law Division. After she accepts the position, Mr. Holliway begins telling her about the division and the firm but, as he’s doing so, Jen breaks the fourth wall and begins a conversation with the audience.

When asked her thoughts on the division, Jen — having not truly been paying attention — tells him that it’s a bit agnostic, a phrasing that has many heading to Google to figure out what exactly it means. And that’s where we come in!

What does agnostic mean in She-Hulk episode 2?

So what exactly did Jen mean when she told Mr. Holliway that she thought the Superhuman Law Division was agnostic? When used as an adjective as Jen did in the conversation to describe the division, agnostic means noncommital which essentially was a way of Jen saying the division had no clear or distinctive character.

This is likely why Mr. Holliway replied by telling her that her thought was interesting and that the division is “unprecedented for sure.” And just like Jen, we’ll likely be thinking about her use of the term for the next year — okay, so maybe the next few days — too.
