I Am Groot opened a new opportunity for Disney Plus by giving us shorts starring characters that people love. These Marvel, Disney, and Star Wars characters should be the next in line for shorts of their own.

I Am Groot wasn’t the first animated short that Disney has done. Tangled Ever After and Once Upon a Snowman are two previous examples of this. While I Am Groot isn’t the first, it’s definitely the most recent.

Groot may be the most popular character to do this. People love Olaf, but Groot is a whole new level of popular. After watching I Am Groot, this writer believes that it was another experiment by Disney. If this didn’t work, fans would likely never see another non-Disney character in a series of shorts. That being said, the reception wasn’t wasn’t overwhelmingly positive or negative. It received an average rating of 6.9 on IMDb, but also holds a better rating on Rotten Tomatoes from fans (78%) and critics (82%). However,  a lot of people who’d enjoy I Am Groot are younger. They won’t have access to ratings and could have loved it.

Disney isn’t foolish. They’re aware that people have short attention spans. This is why a lot of the Marvel Studios shows are under an hour. I Am Groot’s runtime is perfect for kids. However, it could also work for adults as well. Giving fans more shorts focused on more mature characters as well could see Disney succeed where Tubi may have failed.

Here are some characters that could headline their own Disney Plus shorts. And yes, it’s a list for people of all ages.
