Tosin Cole will lead superhero drama series Supacell for Netflix.

As per Deadline, Tosin Cole has been cast in the lead role in upcoming Netflix series Supacell.

Created by rapper-turned-filmmaker Andrew Onwubolu, a.k.a. Rapman, Supacell is a six-part limited superhero-drama series centered on a group of seemingly ordinary people from the South End of London who happen to obtain superhuman abilities with the only connection being that they are Black.

Rapman is the creator, showrunner, and one of the leading series directors. He is also writing the series. Supacell sounds like it may have a similar format to that of NBC’s Heroes from Tim Kring while adding the British sensibilities of sci-fi comedy-drama of E4’s Misfits series but displaying the Black experience for international audiences to witness.

Who is in Supacell and who is Rapman?

Tosin Cole is playing the lead character, Michael Lasaki, who is an “everyday working man”, described to be deeply in love with his potential romantic interest, Dionne (Adelayo Adedayo). Cole is best known for portraying one of the companions of the Thirteenth Doctor (Jodie Whittaker), Ryan Sinclair, in Doctor Who. He also played the main role of Moses Johnson in AMC’s legal drama 61st Street, created and developed by Peter Moffat.

Rapman is a hip-hop artist based in the UK. He created Shiro’s Story which catapulted him to success and allowed him to sign a deal with Jay-Z’s company, Roc Nation. Then on, he made his directorial debut with Blue Story from his very own screen story. He got nominated for a BAFTA Award for an Outstanding Debut for a British Writer, Director, or Producer.

Supacell stars Tosin Cole, Nadine Mills, Eric Kofi Abrefa, Calvin Demba, Josh Tedeku, Adelayo Adedayo, Rayxia Ojo, and Giacomo Mancini.

Rapman is writing the series and is serving as showrunner and is directing alongside Sebastian Thiel. Rapman, Anna Ferguson, Steve Searle, and Mouktar Mohammed are credited as executive producers.

Mark Hedges and Sheila Nortley are producing with Nortley as associate producer, Geraldine Hawkins is co-producer and Henrietta Lee is an associate producer. The New Wave Agency is producing Supacell for Netflix which has just begun filming.
