The self-titled Penguin series with Colin Farrell as the lead has received an interesting update in the story development process…

The Fantastic Beasts and The Lobster star, Colin Farrell, who played Oswald Oz” Cobblepot aka Penguin in The Batman has stated director/writer/producer, Matt Reeves, is “all over” the anticipated Penguin series. When asked about the current status of The Batman sequel via Entertainment Tonight (H/T: The Direct), at the time, Farrell seemed to imply the Cloverfield director is developing both projects concurrently for HBO Max. Farrell discussed on Reeves:

"“He’s so obsessive about what he does, but he’s all over [HBO Max] The Penguin [series] as well. I mean, he’s not gonna direct it but he’s all over the structure of the scripts and who’s gonna direct them. And so, it’s exciting.”"

Despite Farrell’s enthusiasm, as a consumer of DC-related content and geek culture, it’s challenging to remain hopeful since the ascension of CEO and WBD head honcho, David Zaslav, and his reign so far in the company.

Since the cancellation of Batgirl plus many shows left and right on The CW and HBO Max, respectively, fans of DC must be pondering at this moment when they are gonna hit the next landmine when they strike for gold.

When should The Penguin series be released?

Although still hard to say, since the announcement that Penguin is further down the line in development in [HBO Max’s] proverbial “The Batman Universe” franchise following the cancellation of their axed Gotham PD series and the second headline of the Arkham series in development, if this writer was to hazard a guess, given that the spin-off centered on Farrell’s Oz is ordered to series don’t expect the show to come out either fall 2023 or Pilot Season in Feb-March 2024 at the latest. Whereas, The Direct is predicting The Batman 2 to drop in theaters in late 2024 or early 2025 (pending the film’s green light).

The Penguin follows the infamous crime boss of Gotham, Oswald Cobblepot, better known by the same name as the titular show that is streaming lowlife criminals cower in fear over. It stars Colin Farrell.

Lauren LeFranc is writing the series and is serving as the showrunner. Matt Reeves, Dylan Clark, Farrell, and LeFranc are credited as executive producers.

The Penguin is being produced by 6th and Idaho Productions, Dylan Clark Productions, DC Films, and Warner Bros. Television. It is expected to drop in the near future on HBO Max.
