Marvel Studios’ She-Hulk: Attorney at law received backlash for Megan Thee Stallion and Jennifer Walter twerking. This is an ever-growing huge problem in nerd culture.

Tatiana Maslany has been flawless in She-Hulk: Attorney at Law. If you’re a fan of She-Hulk/Jennifer Walters in Marvel Comics, you’re probably happy with what you’re seeing. She’s been entertaining, clever, and a great lawyer. Who else could get the Abomination out of prison? She’s everything you’d expect from the character.

As far as the show is concerned, it’s been fun. The project has been more of a sitcom than a Marvel Studios project with action scenes. The first of its kind for Marvel/Disney Plus. Unfortunately, She-Hulk Attorney at Law has left fans divided, but not because of the quality of the show.

She-Hulk backlash is unnecessary

When She-Hulk premiered, there were viewers who didn’t like the way Jennifer Walters acted. It upset them that she made fun of her cousin Bruce Banner (the Hulk) during their training and wouldn’t drop the conversation about Steve Rogers being a virgin. Episode 3 caused more controversy when Megan Thee Stallion made her Marvel Cinematic Universe debut.

She added more enjoyment to an already amusing episode. Then the mid-credit scene hit and some people lost their minds. Meg Thee Stallion and Jennifer Walters twerked. Apparently, that’s enough for people to be up in arms. This writer says, let people enjoy what they love.

We (fans) aren’t going to like the same things. That’s not a bad thing. As the phrase goes, variety is the spice of life. It gives people options. If every Marvel Studios project resembled Captain America: The Winter Soldier or Avengers: Endgame, comic book movies and shows would get stale. When that happened, the genre would disappear. That being said, the people being rude and nasty about She-Hulk aren’t doing anyone favors by being incredibly toxic.

It’s been well noted that the comic book fandom can be toxic and sometimes dangerous. Titans actress Anna Diop left social media over racist comments. People were upset that Starfire (an alien) was Black. Writer Dan Slott received threats from angry fans over his Superior Spider-Man story. Just last year, Jon Kent (Superman) came out as bisexual. That caused DC Comics artists to get death threats. A report said, “LAPD officers were recently dispatched to patrol the homes of some of the illustrators/production staffers who created the latest iteration of Superman.” None of this should be allowed. It’s flat-out disgusting.

Comic book fans aren’t the only ones with a negative reputation. Wrestling and Star Wars fandoms are both known for being homophobic, sexist, and racist gatekeepers. If you aren’t what they’re used to, then you’re not good. It’s like there’s no room for change or evolution. Everything has to be Hulk Hogan, Luke Skywalker, or Han Solo. If not, they categorize it as bad or it’s part of the, “woke agenda.” The problem is that the world is full of people that don’t look or act the same. They deserve to be represented as well. Without that representation, how will we grow as people?

In conclusion, imagine a world where every character looked the same. There’d be no Black Panther, Doctor Aphra, or X-Men. We as people should embrace differences. That’s not to say that you should like everything. Doing that would be disingenuous to yourself. However, it’s more than okay to have healthy and positive debates about differences and concluding without being attacked. When that happens, we’ll all be better off as fans and people.
