D23 revealed a lot about the future of the MCU, but there has been a disappointing release update about the Marvel team of mutants known as the X-Men.

The D23 Fan Expo was an event of epic proportions. We knew it would be heading into it because of the hype (not-to-mention the fact that it was the first of its kind since the pandemic) and when Marvel, Disney and Lucasfilm are involved, it always lives up to the hype.

While Marvel Studios stunned audiences at the Studio Showcase, there wasn’t any reference to the X-Men. That’s not that surprising, as there isn’t any confirmed title with the mutants on the calendar (yet!), but some fans were hoping for some kind of update.

Unfortunately, it’s going to be some time before fans get any, it seems. Deadline’s Justin Kroll revealed via Twitter that an X-Men film set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe isn’t happening anytime soon. Taking to social media, Kroll tweeted:

"“Speaking of X-MEN, this film isn’t happening for a very long time, so outside of a writer being tapped, it’s super unlikely any casting decisions get made on that one for some time.”"

That’s undoubtedly going to leave a lot of fans anticipating an X-Men project in the MCU feeling sad, but it also raises questions about the mystery titles yet to be revealed in Phase 6.

Are the X-Men in Phase 6 of the MCU?

Only three Phase 6 titles have been confirmed thus far (Fantastic FourAvengers: The Kang Dynasty and Avengers: Secret Wars), leaving eight unconfirmed titles yet to be announced.

As unlikely as it might have seemed given how quiet everything has been in regards to Marvel’s Mightiest Mutants, fans were hoping an X-Men project might have been one of those mystery projects (especially with recent references to mutants and Wolverine in the MCU), but this recent update casts doubt on that now.

The X-Men are on their way to the MCU but it seems that we’ll just have to wait quite a bit longer for them to arrive.
